Abstract

This article aims to examine the issue of femicide in Paraguay by analyzing the impact of Law No. 5777/16. This legislation was enacted within a historical context where the murders of women were classified as common homicides, thereby obscuring the underlying structures of power and inequality. The law not only establishes an autonomous criminal offense with more severe penalties but also incorporates a comprehensive approach encompassing prevention, victim support, and reparations, highlighting the integration of a gender perspective as a cross-cutting component. In terms of its methodology, this is a basic documentary, non-experimental, qualitative research study with a descriptive scope. However, the analysis of its implementation reveals several challenges. Among these, the low conviction rate compared to the number of registered cases stands out, reflecting deficiencies in investigative and judicial processes. Within this framework, it is concluded that while the aforementioned law represents an essential normative advancement, its effectiveness is contingent upon the sustained commitment of the State and society to address the structural causes of gender-based violence, strengthen the institutions responsible for its enforcement, and promote profound cultural change.
